Some weekends you want the big lights and the packed schedule. Other weekends you want brick sidewalks, green hills, and time to actually look around. That’s the Galena, Illinois weekend we needed—quieter Midwest charm with a Main Street you can stroll, a couple of wine stops that feel genuinely local, and one morning that literally lifts you over the Driftless hills.
Strolling Historic Main Street
We always walk downtown in Galena so we can stop in all the shops, grab bites to eat, or duck into a bar for a drink. Main Street is that classic Midwestern brick canyon—multi-story storefronts, awnings, motorcycles and Jeeps along the curb—and it rewards a slow pace. On our stroll we spotted Massbach Ridge Winery Tasting Room (more on that in a minute), Great American Popcorn Co., River Bend Gallery, Galena Candle & Bath Co. Nothing fancy about the plan—just ducking in and out and soaking up the town.
When we want a cocktail stop, the martinis at Miss Kitty’s Grape Escape are amazing. We love the beer at Goerdts’ Brewhaus, and when we’re in the mood for bubbles we hit Champagne on Main.
One wall stopped us cold for the atmosphere alone: weathered brick ghost signs—old Coca-Cola “Delightful and Refreshing” lettering and faded Galena coal wholesale text. That’s Galena in one frame: history still painted on the brick. We just appreciate the texture.
Massbach Ridge Tasting Room (Downtown)
Right on Main Street, we slipped into the Massbach Ridge Winery tasting room—a cozy downtown stop, not the vineyard estate. We grabbed a selfie with a bottle of SEYVAL on the wall rack behind us and kept it light: good pours, good company, and that “we’re really on a weekend” feeling. SEYVAL is our favorite wine at Massbach—easy call.
Fergedaboudit Vineyard & Winery
Separate from the downtown tasting room, we also made it out to Fergedaboudit Vineyard & Winery—and this one is all about the estate view. From the covered patio you look over a lily-pad pond, a gravel path, picnic seating and a white event arbor, then vineyard rows rolling into those Driftless hills. It’s the kind of stop where you sit a minute longer than you planned.
Bread and Vine
When it was time to eat, Kevin’s verdict was simple: Bread and Vine… Yum!!! We dug into a pot of steamed mussels and tore into a basket of sliced baguette at the bar. That’s the whole review we need—warm, casual, and exactly what you want after a day of walking town.
Riverfront + Civil War Reenactment
Down by the water we snapped a sunny riverfront selfie—blue sky, trees across the way, that easy “we’re here” energy. Later we found ourselves as spectators on a grassy hillside for Grant’s Home Front Civil War Reenactment and Encampment—uniforms on the flat across the river, a plume of white smoke, folks sitting in the grass taking it all in. We weren’t in the show—we were just grateful for a front-row hillside seat.
Horseshoe Mound Preserve Overlook
For a quiet reset, we headed up to Horseshoe Mound Preserve. The overlook has a viewing telescope, sandstone markers, and that wide Driftless sweep of green hills and forested valleys. It’s the kind of stop where you put the phone down for a second—then pick it right back up because the view is ridiculous.
Hot Air Balloon Evening
Then came the bucket-list stretch of the trip: an early-evening hot air balloon flight with Galena On the Fly, Inc. We watched the colorful envelope inflate on the field, climbed aboard, and got that wild view looking straight up into the burner as flame filled the balloon. The views were incredible—from the air, Galena’s rolling hills look like a green quilt—roads snaking through timber, pockets of homes, sunbeams breaking through the clouds. Kelli’s basket selfie with the balloon’s shadow stretched across the field might be our favorite frame of the whole weekend.
Landing was flawless. You never really know where you’ll touch down—the chase team follows the balloon and calls farmers for permission—and then there we were, champagne in a field after landing. Perfect example of Midwest Nice.
Where We Stayed: Suite Victory
Home base for the weekend was Suite Victory, an Airbnb loft that fit us perfectly—exposed brick and industrial loft vibes in the living space, an open-concept bedroom and living area under painted joists, a kitchen with a farmhouse sink, patterned tile, and that classic tin ceiling detail, plus a bathroom with dual vessel sinks and a walk-in glass shower. Who This Trip Fits (And Would We Go Back?)
Galena is for couples who like a walkable historic downtown—shops, bites, Grape Escape martinis, Goerdts’ Brewhaus beer, and Champagne on Main when you want bubbles—plus a couple of wine stops (downtown tasting + vineyard patio), a solid casual meal, and at least one “wow” outdoor moment—whether that’s an overlook telescope or floating over the hills. It’s easy, scenic, and surprisingly full without feeling frantic.
Would we go back? Absolutely. We’d stroll Main Street again, sit on that Fergedaboudit patio a little longer, and if the weather lined up, we’d chase another balloon morning in a heartbeat.

Is Galena good for a summer or early-fall weekend?
From what we saw—full green hills, sunny riverfront walks, outdoor reenactment seating, and balloon weather—yes. It felt like classic warm-season Midwest getaway energy.
What’s the difference between Massbach Ridge and Fergedaboudit?
For us they were two different vibes: Massbach Ridge’s tasting room is a downtown Main Street stop; Fergedaboudit is the estate patio overlook with pond, vineyard rows, and hill views. Ferrgetaboutit also features dry wines which is our jam.
Do you need a car in Galena?
Once we’re downtown we always walk—shops, bites, and bar stops are half the fun that way. For the vineyard estate, Horseshoe Mound Preserve, and the balloon field, though, a car made those stops easy.
Where did you stay?
We stayed at Suite Victory, an Airbnb loft with industrial brick character, an open loft layout, a full kitchen, and a dual-sink bath. We share it as our actual home base—not as a booked affiliate stay.
Is the hot air balloon worth it?
If you get a clear evening with Galena On the Fly, yes. The inflate, the burner, those aerial Driftless views, a flawless landing, and champagne in a field afterward were a highlight of the whole trip—Midwest Nice at its best.
